Welcome SAS Global Issues Group members!
I have created this site as a place for us to come to share ideas about how to make the SAS GIG as effective as possible in tackling one of the 8 United Nations Millenium Goals. These goals are (click the link to learn more about each one):
The goal of the SAS GIG is to choose one of the issues from this list, and:
  • We will begin by educating ourselves abou the issue, learning everything there is to know about how it is affecting people around the world, and understanding what kinds of solutions exist to imrpove the lives of those struggling with it.
  • Next we will make contacts with a local agency already working in the area relating to our issue. We will work with the agency to develop a service project through which the SAS community can help with the efforts already under way in the chosen area.
  • The club will work to educate and involve the school community about our chosen issue, with our goal being to raise awareness of the challenges faced by the world's less fortunate people, in the hope that our efforts can make a small difference for those struggling with a global issue.

Global Issues Network Town Meeting: While we are only one group at one school in one city in the world, the Global Issues Network stretches across six continents and includes hundreds of international schools and thousands of students, all engaged in activities aimed at addressing the UN Millennium Goals. "We will have time to reach the Millennium Development Goals – worldwide and in most, or even all, individual countries – but only if we break with business as usual. We cannot win overnight. Success will require sustained action across the entire decade between now and the deadline. It takes time to train the teachers, nurses and engineers; to build the roads, schools and hospitals; to grow the small and large businesses able to create the jobs and income needed. So we must start now. And we must more than double global development assistance over the next few years. Nothing less will help to achieve
the Goals." - U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan
